Country Aiming To Expand Domestic Demand
CHINA is aiming to improve people's lives next year by raising the number of people on middle incomes and expanding domestic demand for consumer goods.
"China should take a solid grip on the strategy to expand domestic demand, which requires more efforts to secure and improve livelihoods, accelerate the development of service industries, and raise the proportion of middle-income citizens," a statement issued after the closing of the economic conference said.
The country will increase fiscal investment in improving people's lives, and effectively handle significant issues related to public wellbeing, it said.
The rapid rise in prices for consumer goods and housing have spurred demands for higher salaries.
The Shanghai government said yesterday that 650,000 jobs had been added in the city this year, and the average disposable income of residents is expected to rise 14 percent this year.
It said the average disposable income of urban residents had risen 11.3 percent a year from 2006 to 2010 while residents in suburban areas had seen incomes rise 10.5 percent year-on-year in the same period.
People's lives in Shanghai had been improving in the past five years with the municipal government actively increasing the number of jobs, the coverage of medical insurance, and the quality of education, the city government said.
