County bureaucrats grilled over tourist train debacle

THE government of a poor county in central Henan Province was accused of wasting nearly 10 million yuan (US$1.5 million) of public fund to build a tourist train that overturned on a test run and has been left idle.

The train and a 4.5-kilometer track built as a tourist attraction in Dancheng County are gathering dust after the train rolled over last December due to malfunction, the local Eastern Daily reported today.

The six train drivers were found without a proper license, according to a deputy director of Dancheng Public Affairs Bureau, who said she didn't know the price for each ride or if the investment could be recouped through ticket sales.

The county government is negotiating with a local hotelier about the sale of the tourist train. No agreement has been reached so far.
