County mayor given life sentence for bribery

A county leader has been sentenced to life imprisonment for taking bribes, including gold bars, while he served as the mayor of Subei County, a well-known gold producer in northwestern Gansu Province.
Man Man, 46, was accused of taking bribes worth 6.57 million yuan (US$1.03 million), including US$105,000 in cash, from 23 individuals. Some of them are unlicensed gold mine contractors.
In return, he helped the bribers to win mining contracts in bidding and get government jobs, a local newspaper Lanzhou Morning Post reported today.
He also obtained illegally real estate properties worth 2.08 million yuan. The court ordered all his illegal income be confiscated, the paper said.
