County plans KTV in government building

A COUNTY in Wenzhou City is asking the public for its views after it was announced the local government plans to set up a KTV parlor in one of its office buildings to boost revenue.

The Dongtou County Administration of Culture, Radio, Film, TV, Press and Publication in Zhejiang Province's Wenzhou City solicited public views on the entertainment project, today's Qianjiang Evening News reported.

The administration is in charge of entertainment businesses including KTVs.

According to the administration's notice, the KTV will cover 3,000 square meters and will open on the second floor of the six-story building Dongtou New City Shopping Mall.

Although it has been called a shopping mall, it will be a government building. The county's food and drug authority and a disabled person's association will have offices in the building, the Hangzhou-based newspaper said.

Other government buildings and public venues are in the area.

According to state regulations, entertainment businesses should be at least 50 meters from government buildings, schools, hospitals and residential quarters.

The building's developer justified the introduction of a KTV by saying the first three floors were for shopping. The top three stories were designed for office use, according to Li Yi, vice director of Dongtou's New City District Development Headquarters.

But the commercial plan has reportedly been dropped and more government departments will set up offices there because the building's location was unattractive to local shoppers, Li told the Qianjiang Evening News.

He said the county government expected the KTV would help boost tourism and revenue.
