Couple accused of selling three sons for total of 36,000 yuan

A YOUNG couple in central China’s Hunan Province has been detained over the sale of three of their sons over five years, earning them a total of 36,000 yuan (US$5,877), Xiaoxiang Morning Herald reported.

Only two of the three baby boys have been recovered, police said.

The father, surnamed Wang, was detained in September. The public security bureau in Hengyang County of Hengyang city, where the couple lived, confirmed yesterday that the woman was captured in an Internet bar in Sichuan Province on February 20.

The woman, surnamed Zhang, fled last year while pregnant as police were conducting surveillance. Zhang has had six children with Wang, but the status of the three children who were not sold was not disclosed.

In 2006, 16-year-old Zhang and 19-year-old Wang had a son, who they didn’t sell.

Zhang gave birth to their second son in November 2008. One month later, with no regular income and experiencing financial difficulties, they sold that son for 6,000 yuan to a couple in Liuyang city of Hunan, authorities said.

Their third son was born in October 2009 and they sold the baby for 20,000 yuan to a couple in their 60s when the child was two months old. They sold their fifth child, a son, for 10,000 yuan to a couple in Hengyang city in 2012.

Zhang’s father reported them to police in February 2013.

Two of the baby boys were retrieved by police last year, though their status was not disclosed. However, there are still no clues about their second son, police said.
