Couple charged for murdering deranged son

A COUPLE in southwest China stood trial yesterday for beating their mentally-ill grown-up son to death to "end the family's suffering."
Zhang Xiaoyu, a former chief of a television station in Lincang City, Yunnan Province, and his wife Wen Xiuping admitted to striking their 25-year-old son Zhang Li to death and lying to police that they killed him in self-defense in January, Lincang Intermediate People's Court said yesterday.
Zhang Xiaoyu said they first attempted to poison their son with gas, but this was discovered by their son who sent his friend a short message for help.
The mother then pinned Zhang Li down on the bed, trying to keep him quiet when the father rushed in and hit him with a stick.
In a previous testimony, Zhang Xiaoyu said he first thought of murder ten years ago when Zhang Li was diagnosed with periodic insanity at the age of 15.
Zhang Li could easily lose control of his temper and always threatened to kill his parents when he got mad.
The court did not reach a verdict.
