Couple detained after basketball brawl ended in boy's death
A couple in northeast Jilin Province has been detained for instigating a mob to beat a high school student to death after the boy quarreled with their son on the basketball court.
The boy, Wu Tianhao, was a senior high school student in Changchun, the provincial capital. Wu and his friends were playing basketball on Saturday in a local stadium when the couple's son surnamed Hao, also a senior high school student, and his partners joined in.
Wu's friend repeatedly collided with Hao's friend on the court and the two sides soon got into a brawl. Hao called his parents for help and Wu was hacked to death in a gang fight, the East Asia Economic News reported today.
Wu's friend, Xiao Wen, told police that he saw a middle-aged woman directing a mob of knife-wielding young men to beat Wu. Officers identified the woman to be Hao's mother and put her into custody. Hao's father surrendered himself to the police the next day.
Police investigation into the boy's death is ongoing.
Xiao Wen said Wu had a dozen knife wounds in his head when he was admitted to the hospital and his left hand was almost severed.
Wu succumbed to his wounds on Sunday. His father was overwhelmed by grief, suffered a heart attack and fell into a coma. Both his parents were jobless and couldn't stand the blow, the report said.
