Couple faces hefty fine for having 8 babies
A wealthy couple who bore eight test-tube babies may be fined up to 10.1 million yuan (US$1.62 million) for breaking China's one-child policy, family planning officials said.
The couple in Zhaoqing, Guangdong Province longed to have their own baby for years and chose vitro fertilization after other options failed, today's Southern Metropolis Daily reported.
To ensure a high success rate, they transferred eight embryos into the wombs of the wife and two surrogate mothers.
In 2010, the wife delivered three babies in Hong Kong and the two surrogate mothers gave birth to five babies in Guangdong, who were ruled to have violated the one-child policy, the Guangdong Family Planning Commission said.
The couple who reportedly earns more than 1 million yuan a year, will be fined at least 5 million yuan and maybe as much as 10.1 million yuan according to local rules, the paper said.
