Couple jailed over factory slavery

A COUPLE who enslaved mentally ill workers at their factory and forced them to work without pay have been jailed by a court in China's far-western Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

Li Xinglin, owner of the Jiaersi Green Construction Material Chemical Factory in Toksun County, was sentenced to four years and six months in prison on Saturday. Li Yunhua, his wife, was given a two-year term with a three-year reprieve.

Each was fined 50,000 yuan (US$7,704).

The couple were convicted of forcing employees to work and negligently causing serious accidents, according to the court.

Police said the couple had enslaved 18 mentally handicapped workers from 2006 to December last year, forcing them to work without protective gear or pay. The couple said they would not file an appeal.

Incidents of forced labor have shocked China in the past, with slave bosses often preying on the mentally retarded.

In 2007, more than 1,000 people were found working as slaves in brick kilns in the northern province of Shanxi, following a man's search for his missing son.
