Couple sells baby to enjoy one-child benefits
A migrant couple working in Leqing City in east China's Zhejiang Province has been detained for selling their 10-day-old son in order to obtain the one-child certificate for their elder son and get certain benefits.
The 31-year-old husband surnamed Jiang and his 23-year-old wife surnamed Zhang, came from an impoverished area in Guizhou Province. They had their first child in 2009.
Early this year, Zhang was pregnant again and the couple learned that if they had a second child, their elder son would be ineligible for the one-child birth certificate and attached benefits, local media reported.
China introduced the one-child policy in the late 1970s and began issuing the one-child certificate to families who abided by the Family Planning Law adopted in 1982. A monthly allowance and other benefits are also provided.
Instead of having an abortion, the couple decided to sell their second child for some money. On October 22, another son was born and Jiang sold him to a buyer for 40,000 yuan (US$6,412).
They were detained this week after police got a tip-off, but the buyer and the baby have not been located.
