Couple sentenced for girl’s murder

A WOMAN who lured a teenage girl home for her husband to have sex with and then helped him kill her has been given a life sentence by a court in Jiamusi City in northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province.

Also convicted of attempted rape and murder, Tan Beibei’s husband Bai Yunjiang was sentenced to death, the Jiamusi Intermediate People’s Court announced.

The couple were also ordered to pay 374,499 yuan (US$60,175) to the parents of 17-year-old victim Hu Yixuan within 30 days.

Bai said he would appeal, the Legal Evening News reported.

The court said Tan, who was pregnant at the time, pretended to have abdominal pains when she saw the young and pretty Hu near her home in Yenan County on July 24 last year. She asked Hu to help take her home, the court said.

Hu, a nurse intern, agreed and accepted some yogurt from a seemingly appreciative Bai. But it had been laced with sleeping pills and she lost consciousness. Bai gave up trying to have sex with her when he found she was having her period. Fearful of being reported, the couple suffocated Hu, stuffed her body in a suitcase and buried her in a rural area, the court heard.

Tan and Bai were apprehended by police four days later and Tan led them to where Hu’s body was buried.

The couple appeared in court last Thursday.

Under police interrogation, Tan admitted two other crimes.

On June 25 last year, the couple tried to drug a 16-year-old classmate of Bai’s daughter, giving her yogurt tainted with tranquilizer. Bai tried to rape her but gave up the idea at the last moment, Tan told police.

On July 19 last year, the couple planned to rob a friend of Bai’s of his expensive jewelry. They put tranquilizer in his drink but he only drank a little.

On August 6 last year, while in police custody, Tan underwent a cesarean section at Huanan County People’s Hospital — the hospital where Hu had worked as an intern.

The child was sent to a welfare center after the couple and relatives gave up custody.
