Couple suspected of fraud jump off cliff with their mothers after leaving suicide note with Taoist nun

A WOMAN who committed suicide by jumping off Huashan Mountain in Shaanxi Province with three of her family members last month is suspected to have swindled millions with the help of her husband, Shaanxi Metropolitan Daily reported today.

Police discovered the bodies of Li, her husband and their mothers at the bottom of a cliff after they had left a suicide note with a Taoist nun, the report said.

Li had given birth to a baby girl early in October, according to the report.

The couple owned a trading company in Xi’an and led a lavish lifestyle an employee told the newspaper, saying Li’s husband had a watch worth more than 1 million yuan.

The couple borrowed money from acquaintances. A victim surnamed Li was cited as saying he gave 9 million yuan to help the couple make a quick turnover and essentially become a partner in their business.

Li told the newspaper he believed their business was legit when seeing the company’s transaction list. He later could not reach the couple when he wanted the money back, the report said.

Another female victim said Li swindled her of 20 million yuan to invest in a logistics center for a supermarket in 2009. She was tricked out of another 70 million yuan with a fake contract this September, according to the report.

Police are investigating the case, the report added.
