Court clears hospital of wrongdoing
A BEIJING court ruled yesterday that a hospital was not responsible for the death of a pregnant woman whose husband refused to permit a cesarean section he could not afford.
However, Chaoyang District People's Court ruled that Chaoyang Hospital should give the victim's parents 100,000 yuan (US$14,645) in compassionate compensation, Xinhua news agency reported.
Li Liyun, 22, in her ninth month of pregnancy, died from respiratory failure caused by pneumonia on November 21, 2007. The hospital said it recommended a caesarean birth to save her life, yet Li's husband Xiao Zhijun, a restaurant worker, refused to let doctors proceed.
