Court executes man without notifying family

A COURT defended itself after executing a man on death row without notifying his family, sparking anger online, Beijing Times reported yesterday.

Businessman Zeng Chengjie was executed on Friday after being sentenced to death in 2011 for fraud and illegal fundraising involving 3.4 billion yuan (US$550 million), the newspaper said.

His daughter complained on Sina Weibo the court in Changsha City, Hunan Province, had not notified the family beforehand.

The court replied on Saturday via its own Weibo account, saying "the law does not require that convicts who are slated for execution must see their families beforehand."

Members of the online community criticized the court's "ice cold" response.

The court then apologized in a second post, stressing its Weibo account managers had not studied the law closely enough, Beijing Times reported.

The court later issued a third post, saying Zeng was given the option to see his family but declined, according to the report.
