Court maintains death sentence for Beijing official

THE Beijing Higher People's court upheld the death sentence with a two-year reprieve against a former senior official in the Ministry of Commerce for taking 8.45 million yuan (US$1.23 million) in bribes.

Guo Jingyi, 44, the former head of the ministry's treaty and law department was found guilty of graft, made up of 6.8 million yuan in cash and 1.65 million yuan in real estate obtained during his four-year tenure.

Guo received 1.1 million from Huang Guangyu, who was the once richest man on Chinese mainland and was jailed for 14 years for illgeal business operation, bribery and insider trading.

Guo was the highest-ranking official brought down by corruption since the ministry was set up in 2003.

The court also upheld the 11-year-sentence against Liu Wei, a former senior officer of the Administration for Industry and Commerce for taking more than 1.24 million in bribes.
