Court puts bridge back on track
THE Hong Kong government yesterday won its appeal against a lower court ruling invalidating an environmental permit for the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau bridge.
The Hong Kong Environmental Protection Department went to the city's Court of Appeal after the permit issued to developers was quashed in April by the Court of First Instance, which ruled that the department had failed to provide a proper environmental impact assessment.
A retired local resident had earlier challenged the department's decision in a judicial review, arguing the permit for construction of the bridge did not meet World Health Organization standards and would affect her health.
Work on the Hong Kong section of the bridge - being built across the Pearl River estuary to link Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macau - was scheduled to start late last year and be completed in 2016.
The estimated cost of the whole project is 72.9 billion yuan (US$11.4 billion).
