Court upholds corrupt official's death sentence

A COURT in Liaoning Province has upheld a lower court's ruling to sentence the former Party chief of an economic zone in Tianjin City of north China to death with a two-year reprieve for taking bribes and abuse of power.

The assets of Pi Qiansheng, the former Party secretary of Binhai New Area in Tianjin, were also ordered to be confiscated by the Liaoning Higher People's Court, Legal Weekly reported yesterday.

The court heard Pi accepted bribes of more than 7.55 million yuan (US$1.15 million) from 1995 to 2005 and caused the loss of 220 million yuan in state-owned assets.

A businessman identified as Wu Weiguo bought in 2000 an apartment in New York for Pi's daughter, who worked at an accounting firm in the US. Pi tried to avoid conviction by registering the apartment in another name and forging a rental contract between Wu and his daughter.
