Court upholds corruption sentence

A HIGHER court upheld a top official's death sentence with a two-year reprieve after he caused state asset losses of 220 million yuan (US$33 million) and accepted millions of yuan in bribes.

The Intermediate People's Court of Shenyang, capital of Liaoning Province, heard that Pi Qiansheng, 59, abused his position as director of Tianjin Municipality's Binhai New Area, an industrial zone in the city, between 1995 and 2005, the Beijing News reported.

Pi, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Tianjin Committee of the Communist Party of China, was described as having unparalleled power over the zone's management, said an earlier report by Beijing-based Caijing magazine.

In one instance, Pi took advantage of his post and spent 220 million yuan of government money to buy shares in a paper company, the Beijing News reported.
