Court upholds official's life sentence
ZHEJIANG Higher People's Court has upheld the life sentence for a former provincial political advisor for abuse of power and bribery.
It also upheld the decision to confiscate the official's personal wealth, Xinhua news agency reported yesterday.
Dai Beijun, chairman of the Human Resources and Environment Committee of Zhejiang Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, was first sentenced to life in jail in January by Hangzhou No. 1 Intermediate People's Court.
He was convicted of taking 4 million yuan (US$586,000) in bribes and abuse of power during his tenure as provincial environmental bureau chief. He had his son-in-law accept another 200,000 yuan.
He also ordered companies to use monitoring devices produced by a company said to be controlled by his mistress.
Dai complained that the life sentence was too severe a penalty but his appeal was thrown out last month.
