Court upholds sentence against corrupt official

A HIGHER court in Beijing has upheld its 12-year sentence against a former official of the Ministry of Public Security for taking almost 2 million yuan (US$295,000) yuan in bribes, including 1 million from disgraced GOME tycoon Huang Guangyu.

Xiang Huaizhu, 46, former deputy chief of the ministry's economic crime investigation bureau, was found guilty of abusing his position to cover the frauds of several companies, including Huang's GOME Electrical Appliances Co, the Beijing Higher People's Court said.
His personal property of 1 million yuan was confiscated.

Xiang's wife, Li Shanjuan, has been sentenced to one year and seven months for teaming up with him to take bribes of 170,000 yuan. Li worked at the ministry's auditing bureau, China News Service reported today.

Xiang sheltered Huang in a mortgage default scandal and a tax evasion scheme in 2006. In return, Huang asked his assistant Xu Zhongmin to give Xiang nearly 1 million yuan to buy shares of a company owned by Huang before the share price climbed in July, 2007.

Huang also gave Xiang a set of home appliances valued around 60,000 yuan.

Huang, once the richest man on the mainland, is serving a 14-year sentence for bribery, illegal trading and insider trading.
