Court upholds sentence of Metro slugger

A Beijing intermediate court today upheld the six-year jail sentence against a man who kicked a passenger off the subway platform and injured his wife in a fight.

The 46-year-old convict Yang Guiwu got into a fight with the couple on the train in August last year because the couple jostled his girlfriend. They got off at the next Metro station to slug it out. Yang kicked the husband off the platform just as a train was coming, the Beijing No. 1 Intermediate People's Court said.

Yang then jumped off the platform as well and waved at the oncoming train which stopped only a few meters away from them. But the husband was severely injured in his nose, arms and left wrist after he fell down on the track.

A lower court said both Yang and the couple had faults and sentenced Yang to six years in prison and ordered him to pay 230,000 yuan (US$37,000) in compensation to the couple. The husband was sentenced to one year in prison with a two-year reprieve.

The intermediate court upheld the ruling.
