Court upholds sentences in ‘mafia’ case

A COURT in Hubei Province has upheld the death sentence on a former mining tycoon connected to the eldest son of former domestic security chief Zhou Yongkang, the focus of a high-profile corruption investigation.

The Higher People’s Court in Hubei rejected the appeal by Liu Han, former chairman of unlisted Hanlong Group, Xinhua news agency said.

Liu, once ranked as the 230th richest person on China’s mainland, went on trial in March, along with his younger brother Liu Wei and 34 other defendants, for murder and running a “mafia-style” gang.

Both the Liu brothers and three other defendants were sentenced to death in May. Another five were sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve, four to life imprisonment and 22 to various prison terms.

The court also upheld the death penalty for Liu Wei, according to Xinhua. The sentences will now go to the Supreme People’s Court for approval.

China last week announced a probe into Zhou Yongkang, one of its most influential politicians of the last decade.

Sources told Reuters Liu was once a business associate of Zhou’s eldest son Zhou Bin. His rise coincided with Zhou Yongkang’s time as Sichuan Province’s Party chief.

The Party has already gone after several of Zhou’s proteges, including Jiang Jiemin, the top regulator of state-owned enterprises for just five months until last September, when he was put under investigation for graft.
