Court upholds verdict in airport explosion case

A BEIJING court yesterday upheld the verdict in the case of a wheelchair-bound man who was sentenced to six years in prison for setting off explosives at Beijing Capital International Airport in July.

The ruling was delivered by Beijing No. 3 Intermediate People’s Court, with the defendant’s family members and journalists present.

Ji Zhongxing, 33, was found guilty of causing an explosion in a public place, according to the first-instance ruling by Chaoyang District People’s Court in Beijing on October 15.

Ji lodged an appeal after receiving the sentence, saying the court failed to recognize he set the bomb off accidentally and was too harsh.

A native of Shandong Province, Ji set off a homemade explosive device outside the airport’s Terminal 3 arrivals hall exit on July 20, severely injuring himself. A police officer at the scene suffered minor injuries in the explosion.

The Beijing No. 3 Intermediate People’s Court rejected Ji’s appeal and said the verdict delivered by Chaoyang District People’s Court was based on ample evidence and followed the law.

According to the country’s criminal law, anyone who causes explosions or uses other dangerous means to endanger public security without causing serious consequences shall be sentenced to a fixed-term imprisonment of no less than three years but no more than 10 years.
