Court verdict on grenade accident that killed 1 kid, injured 3
A boy mistook a hand grenade as a dumbbell and accidentally detonated it, killing one girl and injuring three children in 2006. The case was tried recently in a court in Rongchang County, southwestern Chongqing Municipality.
The grenade was found under a bed in a house where the adults were holding a funeral service. One boy surnamed Guo lifted it up several times as a dumbbell and pulled the fuse in the handle. As it emitted smoke, the boy tossed it to another child and it exploded.
The court learned that the explosion killed the house owner's granddaughter and wounded three other children who still have shrapnel in their bodies and require multiple surgeries to remove them, China News Service reported today.
The court ruled that the house owner should bear 80 percent of the medical costs and pay the victims 400,000 yuan (US$63,120) in compensation. The boy's parents should also pay 75,000 yuan in compensation, the report said.
