Courts promise to get tougher on terror
Chinese courts will hand down harsh punishments to people found guilty of terrorist or secessionist activities, according to a statement released on Saturday.
The announcement was made following a meeting of chief justices of higher courts from across the country.
Courts will hand out 鈥渉arsh鈥 punishments for criminal offenses that threaten the national political and economic security, or social stability, it said.
They will also play an active role in the fight against terrorism in accordance with the new counter-terrorism law, the statement said.
Violent crimes 鈥 such as murder and kidnapping 鈥 and those that severely infringe on women and children鈥檚 rights should be cracked down in order to improve people鈥檚 sense of security, along with illegal obtaining and disclosure of private information and corporate commercial secrets, it said.
China鈥檚 courts will also help to fight corruption by handing down tough punishments to those convicted.
Trial procedures for fugitive officials will be improved, including courts taking an active role in operations to track down and repatriate criminals and their ill-gotten gains.
The statement said courts must protect people鈥檚 human rights and called for caution in handing out death penalties.
