Crackdown On Officials' Parties
CHINA is cracking down on lavish parties and trips organized by government officials at taxpayers' expense.
Official tours to Las Vegas and elsewhere cost taxpayers about 400 billion yuan (US$58 billion) a year, according to CCTV. On one such trip, officials stayed at a US$700-a-night Las Vegas hotel and visited a San Francisco sex show. One official was arrested after he wrote about casual sex, drinking and under-the-table payments at parties.
Excesses reached a point where President Hu Jintao in April warned officials of the temptations of women, money and power.
Progress is being made, however. Spending on overseas junkets, receptions and cars declined 5.7 billion yuan this year, Wu Yuliang, the Party's top anti-corruption official, said.
