Crackdown nets 2,000 suspected gang members
CHONGQING police have seized more than 2,000 suspects in a recent crackdown on the city's gangs and violence.
Police raids with about 7,000 officers have smashed 14 major gangs in the mountainous city and apprehended 24 suspected gang leaders as well as nearly 200 alleged key members.
Officers also seized ammunition, weapons and drugs and cleared up over 1,700 criminal cases.
Detainees are under investigation and they may face about 50 charges including murder, kidnap, rape, robbery, producing and selling narcotics.
The campaign has won wide support among local residents as police received over 14,000 tip-offs, with 80 percent of sources using their real names.
From January to August, Chongqing police cleared up about 58,600 criminal cases, up 34.8 percent from a year ago. About 22,500 people were penalized, up 7.6 percent from a year ago.
In Chongqing's downtown, the number of murders has declined 8.5 percent from a year ago, the lowest rate in five years.
Police cleared up 91.4 percent of fatal cases, nearly three percentage points higher than the country's average.
During the campaign, more than 700 suspects surrendered to police.
Police at Chognqing's Chaotianmen and Caiyuanba districts seized about 1,700 guns and 800 suspects.
Officers also cleared up more than 20,000 old cases and caught about 7,000 wanted fugitives.
