Crackdown on DEHP additives intensifying

The Jiangmen City government in Guangdong Province has ordered two local additives companies to halt production and recall all products tainted with carcinogenic additives.

Their warehouses have been sealed off and company officials have been held for investigation after the State Food and Drug Administration issued an urgent notice on its website on Saturday that DEHP had been found in eight additives made by four domestic companies.

Meanwhile, food manufacturers who used the eight DEHP-tainted additives in production began to withdraw their food products from shelves. They included guava essence made by the Meiyi Flavors & Fragrances Co in Guangdong, and osmenthus and almond essences made by Hangzhou Yixiangyuan Biotech Co in Zhejiang Province.

Shanghai food safety authorities haven't found the eight additives in the city.

In another development, drugstores in Ji'nan, capital of Shandong Province, were found selling tonics containing DEHP-like plastic polymers. Their suppliers said they would withdraw all these tonics from the market immediately.

The DEHP additive scandal has spread from Taiwan to the mainland. Tests found local consumers are exposed to the harm of DEHP-like chemicals due to the use of plastic polymer food containers.

But the level of contamination is much less than the DEHP thickening agent, experts said yesterday.
