Crackdown on big dogs after spate of attacks

POLICE in Nanjing City, capital of Jiangsu Province, will launch a campaign to seize big dogs.
Several city residents had recently been attacked by big dogs, Yangtze Evening News reported yesterday.
Police are also cracking down on owners who walk dogs without leashes.
At least 30 breeds, including Tibetan mastiffs, German shepherds, Bernese mountain dogs and dobermans are banned for individual breeding in major areas of Nanjing. All the banned dogs are more than 61 centimeters tall.
Companies which have to raise big dogs for security purposes should register at police stations.
Individuals living outside the major areas of the city can raise big dogs indoors after registering with police, the report said.
Police asked all dog owners to buy certificates for their dogs and pay fees every year.
They asked for public help in reporting the presence of big dogs, with 50-yuan (US$7.32) rewards on offer.
