Crackdown on illegal garbage imports pays off
More than 40 tons of undeclared waste plastics have been returned overseas while 200 tons of hazardous zinc tailings have been disposed of properly, Qingdao customs officials said in Shandong Province yesterday.
In accordance with orders by the country’s General Administration of Customs, Qingdao launched “Operation Green Fence” in February. It has since stepped up management of imported solid waste and launched a crackdown on illegally imported garbage.
As of mid-December, Qingdao customs had busted 101 cases of solid waste smuggling and captured 37 suspects. Over 10,000 tons of waste paper, plastics and tailings have been returned or disposed.
Importing solid waste has increased in the past decade. Such imports totaled US$40 billion in 2012.
