Crash redress from public coffers
TWO government bureaus in Nanyang City, Henan Province, are under fire for spending 480,000 yuan (US$72,267) of taxpayers' money to compensate the families of three people killed by a senior official in a car crash.
Usually in China, a person judged to be responsible for an accident pays compensation.
Yu Xiangjie, who has been suspended as head of Xixia County Meteorological Bureau, hit three pedestrians including a two-year-old girl and an 81-year-old woman in a crash caused by his error.
Yu was escorting his superior from the Nanyang City Meteorological Bureau when the accident occurred on September 26.
He agreed to pay 630,000 yuan in compensation, reported local Dahe Daily.
A post on Tianya.cn said Yu paid 150,000 yuan, Xixia weather bureau put up 280,000 yuan and Nanyang bureau paid 200,000 yuan.
Li Haibing, Nanyang meteorological bureau head, said the money was "correctly used," as it was allocated for "organizing activities."
