Crash 'victim' cons 1,000 drivers
BEIJING police are asking drivers to come forward after catching a 65-year-old man who allegedly swindled hundreds of thousands of yuan by pretending to be hit by cars.
Police investigation indicated the jobless man, surnamed Sun, had created more than 300 accident scenes in the past nine years and expected the exact number to exceed 1,000, today's Xinmin Evening News reported.
Sun started his con in 2001, police said, breaking a couple of bones in his early years. Later he just pretended to be injured.
His trick was not revealed until 10 days ago when Dongcheng District police found Sun had made a record 341 calls to traffic police since 2001.
Sun allegedly told police that he preyed on cars that were breaking the traffic rules on pedestrian crossings, asking drivers for between 500 yuan (US$73) and 4,400 yuan.
