Cremations shifted from Babaoshan
THE cremation facilities at the Babaoshan Revolutionary Cemetery will be shifted out of downtown Beijing, said a local official.
But the cemetery will not be relocated, said Zhou Maofei, chief of Shijingshan District Government.
The cremating facilities will be shifted to Wolonggang in Mentougou, a district in the west of the capital city, by the first half of 2011, Zhou said without giving a start date.
Construction of the new crematorium will take one to two years to complete, said Zhou.
Civil affairs departments are considering opening a center for education in patriotism and a new museum at the cemetery, according to Zhou.
Late Chinese leaders, including Zhu De and Dong Biwu, and foreign friends such as American writer Agnes Smedley are interred at Babaoshan Cemetery. The remains of many ordinary Chinese are also kept there.
