Crew punished for dispute with girl, 10

XIAMEN Airlines yesterday backed its decision to punish a flight captain who refused to carry a 10-year-old passenger after she shouted at a flight attendant.
The airline issued a statement saying the captain failed to take the passenger’s “immaturity” into account.
However, the carrier said the captain did have the right to refuse to take passengers if there were safety concerns.
“The airline suspended the flying of the captain and its crew for five days mainly to remind all the other crew members to use the right to resist any passengers cautiously,” the statement said.
Flight MF8036 from Dalian in northeast China to Changsha in central China’s Hunan Province was delayed last Thursday after the captain refused to have the 10-year-old as a passenger.
The flight was initially delayed for two hours due to bad weather and passengers were allowed to leave the plane to wait in the terminal building.
The girl is said to have shouted at the chief flight attendant while getting off the aircraft. It is not known what words were used.
The captain asked her family to apologize but they refused. He then refused to have the family as passengers, citing safety concerns, according to the airline.
After the passengers, apart from the girl and her parents, boarded the plane, 10 people flying with the family protested at the decision and asked to get off the plane.
The captain then had to ask all the passengers to disembark for another round of security checks as stipulated by civil aviation regulations.
The aircraft finally took off around 8pm, the airline said.
“The crew members must better deal with the similar cases in the future and better protect the airline’s image,” the airline said in a statement issued to all its employees.
