Crime boss faces death

THE head of a mafia-style family was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve after he was found guilty of eight crimes in Jieyang, Guangdong Province, a court said.

Jieyang Intermediate People's Court said Lin Hanqin, 51, forced others into prostitution, illegally owned guns and operated casinos.

Lin led the ring that included his brothers Lin Hanzhong and Lin Hanhui, his son Lin Dongyan along with drug addicts and hooligans. They started to operate the illegal business in 2002. They were also found guilty of killing one person over a business dispute.

Eight other ring members were sentenced to jail terms ranging from two to 11 years, the court said.

In May 2010, Lin Hanqin illegally sold salt in Fengjiang Town with the help of his older brother, Lin Hanhui, a local Party official.

He purchased large amounts of salt without authorization and forced many licensed vendors to leave the market. The business was lucrative, the court said. The gang also set up casinos, which is illegal on Chinese mainland.
