Critically sick man from Sichuan confirmed as H5N1 bird flu case

A man in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, has been confirmed being infected with H5N1 bird flu and he is in critical condition.

The 42-year-old patient has a history of contact with live poultry, the Chengdu Center for Disease Control and Prevention said.

He started developing symptom of fever late last month and was hospitalized at a district hospital in Qingyang.

He was transferred to a bigger hospital after his disease worsened on January 2, and was diagnosed with severe pneumonia and respiratory failure.

None of the 58 people who had close contact with the man had reported symptoms so far, according to the center.
