Crook cop seeks mercy
THE former police chief in Chongqing Municipality stood trial yesterday for the second time for bribery and conniving with the city's notorious crime rings for more than a decade.
Wen Qiang, former head of Chongqing Public Security Bureau, was sentenced to death last month for taking 12 million yuan (US$1.7 million) in bribes and protecting gangs. Wen was also convicted of raping a university student after getting her drunk.
Wen failed to account for the sources of more than 10 million yuan in personal assets.
He appealed for a lenient sentence, saying "death was too much for (his) crime."
At yesterday's court hearing, Wen appealed all counts of his conviction, citing a mismatch of facts and the conviction itself.
Wen said he cooperated with prosecutors - a consideration for leniency in accordance with the law.
Wen was the highest ranking official to fall in last year's massive clamp-down on organized crime in Chongqing. More than 90 officials were prosecuted and 42 found guilty of sheltering mafia-style gangs in the city.
The hearing will last two to three more days, the Chongqing Municipal Higher People's Court spokesman said.
