Crowd of nearly 100 attacks maternity hospital after woman loses fetus

A CROWD of nearly 100 people led by a patient’s family attacked and damaged a Guangzhou maternity hospital that they blamed for causing a woman pregnant eight months to lose her fetus.

The attack, at 3pm yesterday, heavily damaged the reception hall of the Guangzhou Elizabeth Women's Hospital after the patient’s family hurled bricks and other debris at the facility, Nanfang Daily reported today.

The incident, lasting 20 minutes, blocked traffic and injured several medical staff — one staff member had serious injuries around the eye. More than 20 local police were called to the scene and the hospital is open.

The pregnant patient, surnamed Peng, visited a doctor after she experienced heavy vaginal bleeding on November 26. The hospital did not keep her for observation, but prescribed some medicine to prevent a miscarriage, the report said, quoting her relative.

The hospital pronounced the eight-month fetus dead the next day when Peng arrived for further treatment. Labor was induced and she gave birth to the dead baby boy.

Peng’s family said the hospital gave no reply after rounds of negotiation over the case.

The medical dispute has severely hampered the hospital’s ability to function, and the attack has been reported to judicial departments, a hospital official said.

The hospital will take an active role in solving the dispute based on the results of a third-party autopsy, the official added.
