Crowded, slick road claims 6 cars in wedding motorcade

SIX cars in a wedding motorcade had a chain of rear-end collisions in the Zhenjiang section of the Yangzhou-Liyang Expressway in Jiangsu Province yesterday, but no one was hurt, the Yangtze Evening Post reported yesterday.

The accident came as the motorcade was speeding to pick up the bride — a dangerous proposition on roads crowded by returning Spring Festival travelers, especially as conditions deteriorated because of precipitation.

The weather caused authorities to lower the speed limit to 60 to 80 kilometers per hour on most highways in Jiangsu Province yesterday.

Traffic police used a car audio system yesterday morning near the site of an earlier accident to warn passing drivers to slow down. That accident caused a three-car pile-up on the road.

A wedding motorcade led by a white Cadillac, driving at 100 kilometers per hour to pick up the bride, ignored the warning and all six of its cars collided.

Police said the lead car drove too fast and slipped across the road when it braked before bumping in to the previous accident vehicles, leaving five cars behind it piled up. All the six cars were seriously damaged, but there were no injuries, police said.

It wasn’t the only wedding crash in the area: Two cars in another wedding motorcade collided in another accident in the same section of the road.

The highway patrol team of Jiangsu traffic police reminded drivers to keep a safe distance and to avoid speeding, especially in bad weather.
