Crowd-management system may go nationwide
A CROWD analytics system designed to prevent accidents at major commercial areas in Beijing might be rolled out nationwide.
The system was developed by the Beijing Labour Protection Institute and has been in operation in the capital for the past five years. It provides real-time data on crowd density, distribution and flow and can identify potentially dangerous patterns.
It is currently used at four tourist areas — Xidan, Shichahai, Dashilan and Tian’anmen Square.
When a possible risk is detected, the system issues a 10-minute alert to the authorities, who can then decide on an appropriate response.
“The system is operational 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” said Yao Xiaohui, director of the emergency management lab at the institute.
It can also predict crowd numbers, which helps with event planning, according to the director.
The Beijing government is planning to install more of the systems in railway stations and at religious sites. It is also seeking trials of the system in 30 regions across the country.
Such a system might have helped in Shanghai on New Year’s Eve, when poor management and overcrowding resulted in the deaths of 36 people.
