Crowds block street over death of street vendor
AUTHORITIES in southwest China are investigating the death of a disabled street vendor and the speculation that he was killed by an urban management officer led to a standoff of thousands of people on the street for hours.
The Guizhou provincial government said they started a probe after crowds gathered on a 400-meter-long street in Anshui City where the hawker died at 1:43pm yesterday.
The hawker was said to have had a conflict with the city's urban management officers, but this was not confirmed by local authorities.
A car belonging to the urban management bureau was smashed and overturned by the angry crowd not far from the body of the disabled vendor, Xinhua news agency reported today.
The crowds were later dispersed by police.
