Crowds experience China's first intercity Metro

AN estimated 170,000 passengers poured into China's first intercity Metro line connecting Guangzhou and Foshan, southern Guangdong Province on its first day of operation.

The 21-kilometer Guangfo Metro cuts the trip between Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong , and Foshan, a bustling business city, to 40 minutes. There are 14 stations along the line with an 8-minute interval at the current stage. Tickets range from 2 yuan (3 US cents) to 6 yuan, Guangzhou Daily reported today.

Guangfo Metro was packed yesterday, partly because of a 30-day free public transportation offered by Guangzhou government, forcing the Metro operator to close the interchange between Metro Line 1 and Guangfo Metro temporarily in afternoon.

The operator estimated the passenger volume would reach 200,000 on normal days and might peak to 400,000 as people want to enjoy the free ride.

Guangzhou government allowed residents to take free public transportation during the coming Asian Games and the Asian Para Games in a bid to relieve traffic congestion and promote public transportation.
