Culprit in CCTV fire to serve 13 more years
A FORMER China Central Television official who was sentenced to seven years in prison last May for causing a deadly fire at the state broadcaster's new Beijing building has been given another 13 years in jail for graft and embezzlement.
Xu Wei, 52, former head of the construction office for the new CCTV headquarters, embezzled more than 3.22 million yuan (US$510,692) from two CCTV subsidiaries, the Beijing No. 2 Intermediate People's Court heard.
Xu was also accused of asking for 1 million yuan in bribes from a contractor in 2008, the Procuratorial Daily reported yesterday.
The official siphoned off the state assets between 2005 and 2007, establishing three companies, purchasing residential apartments and buying travel tickets for relatives, the court was told.
All the money involved has been retrieved, said the court, which also ordered the confiscation of 480,000 yuan from Xu's personal assets.
Fire struck the 30-story building in Beijing's central business district on February 9, 2009 -- that year's Lantern Festival, causing 160 million yuan in losses.
One fireman died and six firemen and two construction workers were injured.
Xu was jailed last year for staging a fireworks display at the site of the new building without approval from the local fire department.
