Culprit of fatal campus hit-and-run arrested
The son of a high-ranking police officer in Baoding, Hebei Province, has been arrested for killing a college student and injuring another in a campus hit-and-run that occurred on October 16.
The People's Procuratorate of Wangdu County in Baoding approved the arrest of Li Qiming yesterday on charge of vehicular manslaughter, which carries a maximum prison sentence of three years.
The 22-year-old driver has drawn public wrath after he told an angry crowd that blocked his car at the gate of Hebei University that his father Li Gang was a senior police officer in the city of Baoding.
Hebei University President Wang Hongrui also drew public criticism after the school reportedly forbade student witnesses from talking about the accident.
An online post on Tianya.com, a popular Chinese online forum, accused Wang of abusing his position to reciprocate the help of Li Qiming's father in investigating the whistleblowers who reported Wang's plagiarism in several doctoral papers, China News Service reported today.
The university spokesman, Wang Jingming, said the president had called the police because the accusation was groundless.
