Cultural program celebrates The Bard
The Shakespeare Lives program, sponsored by the British Council and the GREAT Britain campaign, was launched yesterday in Beijing.
The global program celebrates the life and work of William Shakespeare and his influence on culture, education and society on the 400th anniversary of his death.
The Chinese program will feature brand new productions of The Bard鈥檚 plays, as well as film, music, public talks, and educational and online activities.
Shakespeare Lives will foster a cultural, educational and economic exchange between Britain and China, British ambassador Barbara Woodward said at the launch ceremony.
鈥(The program) is developing educational links between the UK and China, sharing the best of UK education and inspiring Chinese students to study in the UK, particularly subjects such as English literature, theater, performing arts, and film,鈥 said Woodward.
The Royal Shakespeare Company and Shakespeare鈥檚 Globe will bring 鈥淗enry IV,鈥 鈥淗enry V鈥 and 鈥淭he Merchant of Venice鈥 to Chinese theaters.
It is hoped that the program will also stimulate deeper collaboration between creative talent in both countries.
The Gecko Theater and Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center will premiere a new work in Shanghai in October, linking Chinese playwright Tang Xianzu鈥檚 鈥淒ream Plays鈥 with 鈥淎 Midsummer Night鈥檚 Dream.鈥
To commemorate the anniversary of Shakespeare鈥檚 death, a Chinese musical entitled 鈥淲ith Love, William Shakespeare鈥 was staged in Beijing in January.
