Curbing home prices is high on the agenda

THE central government will firmly curb the excessively rapid rise of housing prices in some cities this year, Premier Wen Jiabao said yesterday, once again voicing China's determination to cool the red-hot property market.

The government aims to "genuinely stabilize housing prices and meet the reasonable demands of residents for housing," Wen said during the opening annual session of the National People's Congress.

"We will further implement and improve policies for regulating the real estate market and firmly curb the excessively rapid rise in prices in some cities," Wen said.

He said the government will formulate an annual housing plan, designate sites for building low-income housing when planning new construction projects and make sure all designated sites are used for affordable homes.

According to a draft, the central government plans to build 36 million low-income housing units during the 2011-2015 period, raising the proportion of affordable homes to 20 percent of the country's total by 2015.
