Customers demand refund after cakes sicken nearly 300

A pastry company in Zhejiang Province rejected the demand for refund from customers who have the company's voucher cards after a food poisoning case sickened about 300 people in Ningbo on May 30, China News Service reported today.

Cakes made by Zhejiang Green Food Company sickened 280 employees of Ningbo Huamei Thread Company and their relatives and 16 kindergarten children. Ningbo food safety watchdog confirmed the food poisoning was caused by bacteria in the cakes.

Many people who own the company's voucher cards asked for a refund after the incident, but they were all rejected by the store, the report said.

Qian Yuehu, the company spokesman, said they will communicate with the card holders and try to persuade them to give up their refund request.

An official with Ningbo Huamei Thread Company said the company had covered the 400,000 yuan (US$65,000) medical costs of its employees and their relatives, but Green Food, the trouble maker, had said or done nothing to compensate the victims.

The report said Green Food had been fined more than 300,000 yuan and it is now working out a compensation deal.
