Customs tariff on iPad

CHINA'S Customs said a 1,000-yuan (US$150) tariff will be imposed on each iPad brought from overseas, dampening online resellers' business and people's enthusiasm for the hot-selling gadget from Hong Kong.

iPad, a tablet personal computer, is among 20 dutiable items and a 1,000-yuan tax will be imposed on each iPad brought or mailed from overseas - whether for reselling or personal use, the Customs said as it tries to crack down on smuggling, Oriental Morning Post reported yesterday.

The Customs reminded people to declare their iPad when leaving the country, else they may have to pay the tax when they return home.

The regulation, which makes an iPad brought from Hong Kong more expensive than from the Chinese mainland, has dealt a heavy blow to online resellers and forced many shops on Taobao.com, China's biggest online shopping platform, to either raise the price or shut down, Shanghai Evening Post said.

A 16G version iPad with WiFi sells for around 3,500 yuan in Hong Kong, cheaper than those sold at Apple Stores on the Chinese mainland, 3,988 yuan.
