Cybersecurity among issues discussed at China-US talks
CHINA will work with the United States and other countries on cybersecurity issues, State Councilor Yang Jiechi said yesterday.
“We think that cybersecurity is very important,” Yang said through a translator at the opening of the US-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue which takes place amid tensions over cybertheft and China’s island building in the South China Sea.
“We will work with the United States and other countries to work in the spirit of openness to properly address the relevant issues. We hope that this round of the S&ED will achieve positive outcomes,” he said.
America and China must be “honest and direct” about future ties, US Vice President Joe Biden said.
The two powers will have intense disagreements but the world is depending on them to work together, he said.
Biden said China and the US might not resolve all of their differences during the Cabinet-level meetings that began in Washington on Monday with preliminary talks and end today, but should commit to working on them.
“We have to keep at it, day after day after day after day,” he said.
“This relationship is just too important. Not only we depend on it, but the world depends on our mutual success; to put it bluntly, the world is dependent on those of you in this room to continue to work through those issues.”
China’s Vice Premier Liu Yandong said that differences can be managed “as long as our two countries adopt an overall perspective, respect and accommodate each other’s core interests and are committed to a constructive approach to reduce misunderstanding and miscalculation.”
Vice Premier Wang Yang, who is leading the Chinese delegation of about 400 officials, admitted the world’s biggest economies do not agree on everything, saying “on some issues consensus still eludes us.”
But “dialogue is always more preferable than confrontation,” he said.
Welcoming the delegation to Washington, Biden said Beijing must be at the table in all important global negotiations.
“I believe the future of China’s success and global influence is directly tied to the extent to which it acts as a responsible stakeholder,” he said.
“Essential to this is to find new ways to work together even as we seek to manage future competition,” he said.
Biden also stressed the need to keep Asian sea lanes open for trade, apparently referring to China’s disputes with its neighbors in the South China Sea.
