Cycle ban on China’s trains

BICYCLES — including foldable cycles — are from today banned on China’s trains, the country’s railway authority has announced.

The ban is being introduced due to problems with cycles taking up passenger space and blocking corridors, said the China Railway Corporation.

“It might cause inconvenience to some cyclists, but protecting the interest of other passengers and maintaining a good carriage environment is our priority,” said an official with the Shanghai Railway Bureau.

With the approach of Spring Festival, a peak season for rail travel, the authority hopes the new regulation will help maintain order, as cycles taking up space sometimes lead to disputes between passengers.

Shanghai’s railway stations report passengers taking cycles onto trains especially during holidays.

Now they will be required to take the bike apart and pack it away, it they want to keep it with them.

Alternately, cyclists can pay extra and have it transported to their destination.

According to China Railway Express, a logistic service available at main Shanghai railway stations, it costs about 50 yuan (US$8) to ferry a cycle to Beijing.
